Dear ,

Summer is over and autumn is upon us.  This is my favorite time of year.  To me, autumn always seems like a time of renewal and a time of a new beginning.  Of course, in Nevada, it’s the time when the heat starts to decrease and we no longer feel like we live in an oven.  The leaves are starting to turn…what leaves we have, that is!  I have returned from two months on the road in the RV, promoting my books, and seeing the country.  The kitties (Brut & Shotsie) and I are glad to be home.  This was their first RV trip and they adapted to the life style very well.  Only once did Brut decide to sneak out and disappear under the RV, but was very happy to be rescued and continue on the trip with me.  Most of the trip, he sat in his bed in the back window and watched the countryside while Shotsie snoozed and took turns trying out all the seats and various areas of the floor.

I am writing more and more.  And, my writing is getting published.  I have chapters in two new books which will be available soon:  “Shotsie, Career Cat”, the tail (oops, tale) of my beautiful female Burmese cat who thinks she is the office administrative assistant will be in Chicken Soup for the Ultimate Cat Lover’s Soul scheduled to be released in October and a story about my grandmother entitled, “Mama’s Rocker,” is being published in a new series entitled Patchwork Paths.

I am posting to my blog as regularly as my speaking and writing schedule permits.  If you are looking for articles on self-help, you can find them at www.judimoreo.com/blog.  Please drop in sometime. There are a number of articles that have been previously published as well as new articles on a wide range of topics.  I welcome your comments.

Have a wonderful autumn and let me hear from you.

Yamte,

Pick Up the Baton

By Betty Mahalik
Dynamic Solutions

Perhaps like me you've spent the past couple of weeks glued to your television set, watching the Olympics. There have been so many inspired performances, so many Olympic moments. But one stands out for me. Interestingly it's not because the athletes turned in a winning performance. In fact they were disqualified before the final competition. I am referring to the women's track and field team competing in the 4 x 100 meter relay.

They had run three-quarters of the final qualifying heat brilliantly and were on track to move into the medal finals. But on the final leg, the sprinter completing the race dropped the baton during the hand-off. What so impressed me is what happened next. Rather than collapse in defeat on the ground, the runner turned around, ran back and picked up the baton, carrying it across the finish line!

The team was disqualified. There would be no chance to even compete for a medal. But she chose to pick up the baton and finish the race anyway.

What a reminder to all of us in the race of life and business! There are countless times we drop the baton. We lose touch with someone important, a friend, client or associate. We fail to follow-up as promised with a client or prospect and then excuse the behavior with an "oh well, next time." We lose sight of a goal and then figure it's lost for good. We quit working for a cause that may not result in a "win" but might undoubtedly make a difference if we continue. The list could go on.

My point is that, like that sprinter, we have the choice to collapse in defeat and give up, or we can go back, pick up the baton and keep running. Unlike the Olympics that happen only every four years, we run a race daily against our greatest competition...ourselves, our doubts, fears, worries, distractions and a hundred other potentially defeating obstacles. We can choose to keep on going, fulfilling the mission, completing the goal or quit the moment it appears we have lost. In the race of life and business we will be given tests everyday to prove our championship mettle. The question is, will we pick up the baton or collapse in defeat and resign ourselves to "maybe someday."

Take a moment, make a list of ways you've dropped the baton in your life or business and then recommit to picking it up and moving forward, starting today. You never know what you'll gain or learn, or how you'll grow by picking up the baton and crossing the finish line. Choose to make this a championship week regardless!

Forgetting a Person’s Name

By Peggy Vasquez, Executive Assistant
Laboratory Director's Office
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

You receive an invitation to attend a community function or social business event.  You clear your calendar to make it possible to attend.  You go through all of the necessary activities to get out the door.  You get a babysitter, choose what to wear, and after a whirlwind you arrive.  Then as you start mingling with familiar friends and colleagues, you’re approached by someone you've met before but your mind goes blank, you can't remember the person's name.  What do you do?  My first suggestion to you is don't guess!  Calling someone by the wrong name is far worse than admitting to them that you've forgotten their name.

I'll let you in on a secret that my husband and I have used for this exact situation.  We made an agreement years ago that when we get into this embarrassing situation to use one another to get out of the embarrassing situation.  We simply say, “Let me introduce you to my husband/wife.”  This is our signal to introduce ourselves to the other person.  We shake their hand and say, "Hello, my name is Rene'" at that moment the other person naturally introduces themselves in return.  Now all of us know each other's name and can help one another remember the name the next time.  It works beautifully!
Here are a few other tips from Benjamin Levy, author of Remember Every Name Every Time:

    1. If you’re talking to two people who know you but don’t know each other, and you can only recall one of their names, say “Why don’t you introduce yourself to Henry?” to the mystery person. If both names escape you, say, “Why don’t you say hello to each other?”

    2. Use physical touch. Put an arm around the person’s shoulder or grasp their arm to connect with the person. This provides a form of intimacy that will help cover up the fact that you’ve forgotten their name.

    3. Use the “Hubert H. Humphrey Memorial Lower-Lumbar Maneuver.” According to Levy, Humphrey welcomed a gentleman into a conversation he was having with a colleague. The third man greeted both of them by name. Humphrey asked him with a look of concern, “How’s your back?” The man replied his back was better and thanked Humphrey for his concern. As the man walked away, Humphrey’s colleague asked him, “Who was that?” “I’m afraid I have no idea,” said Humphrey. “But you even asked about his bad back.” Humphrey replied, “Everybody my age has a bad back. Whenever I forget someone’s name, I ask him about his back.”

    4. “Go fishing.” Maybe some additional information will help. Say, “It’s been too long. When was the last time we saw each other?” Putting the face in context can help you come up with the name.

    5. Play cards. Carry a few blank Rolodex cards with you. If you see a familiar face at a business event and can't remember the person’s name, pull out a blank card and say, “Thank heaven you’re here. My Rolodex was misplaced during a reconfiguration at our office. Could you please write down your information?”  (You can also do this with business cards.  Simply ask them for their business card and explain that you want to get their information in your contact list.  If they do not have a business card, hand them one of yours and ask them to write down their information on the back of your card.)

    6. Honesty is the best policy. Say, “Of course, I remember you, but your name has slipped my mind.” Mention whatever information you do remember about them—“We met last year at John and Alice’s party”—to show them that they’re not a total stranger. Or simply say, “I’m sorry. I’ve just gone completely blank.” or “Please remind me of your name.”

    7. And help someone out if you think he's having trouble remembering yours.  Instead of saying, ‘Remember me?’  Provide him with all the information he needs to place you: ‘Hi, I’m Jane Smith. The last time we met was at the International Banking Forum in Tucson.’”

New Project: Presenters and Programs

Many of you don’t know that I have embarked on a new adventure of promoting speakers, entertainers, emcees, and authors through a new marketing campaign. If you are a speaker and I haven’t contacted you, I apologize.  Please let me know right away!

Presenters and Programs marketing campaign will put your face and information in front of the right people. Over 17,000 association executives, meeting planners, event coordinators as well as the media will receive our Presenters and Programs catalogue in January 2009.

Each speaker will also receive 100 copies of the catalogue for his/her own distribution.

In addition, you will have a full page dedicated to you as well as banner ads on the Presenters and Programs website. Each speaker in the catalogue will be featured in a write-up in the Presenters and Programs Forum Newsletter and we will publish articles submitted by you.

Most speakers are waiting for an association executive or meeting planner to call them.

That is no way to make a living!!!  You need a proactive campaign that reminds potential clients regularly that YOU are in the marketplace and YOU are what they are looking for!

We are NOT looking for speakers who

  • Are not ethical
  • Are not dynamic
  • Have inferior product
  • Look like something the cat drug in

    or

  • Fear success

If the marketing campaign you are using now isn't working, if you don't have all the speaking engagements you want, if you can't get your office staff to promote you, if you see your revenue declining---then Presenters and Programs is the most cost effective way to get your name and programs in front of the decision makers who are hiring speakers and entertainers for conferences, conventions, meetings, training and facilitation.

For information on being a part of this exciting program, please go to www.presentersandprograms.com
Or call me at (702) 896-2228.

If you are a meeting planner or you need to hire a speaker for any reason, please let me know and I will be sure you get a catalogue and the Presenters and Programs Forum newsletter sent to you.  We already have some of the best speakers in the world participating….

Patricia Fripp, Tony Alessandra, Lenora Billings-Harris, Ruth St. Pierre, Lynette Chappell, Fiona Carmichael, Jack Sheehan, Carl Moore, Manuel Diotte…and more.
